Is Coaching Right for You?
How ready are you for coaching? Read these statements, and consider how right they are for you. You can interpret the statements in either of two ways, depending on your orientation!

Score Yourself. Rank each statement from 1 to 5 on how true each statement is for you. Add the 9 scores. If your total score is:

  •   9-18: Consider waiting until a better time
  •  19-35: Explore your readiness with potential coaches
  •  36-45: You're ready; get started soon!
  1. I really want to stretch and change.
Motivation must come from inside you because only you can change your life. I can't do it for you, and it won't work if you're trying to change simply to please someone else.
  2. I am willing to try things I haven't tried before, to explore new concepts, and I am open to shifting my perceptions and views.
The saying is true - If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you have. Unless you are willing to try new perspectives and behaviors, little is likely to change. Are you open to having fun with experimenting with new views and behaviors?
  3. I value collaboration and am willing to ask for help when I need it.
If you feel that asking for help is an admission of weakness or failure, coaching may not be the right choice for you.
  4. I am disciplined about following through on commitments.
Talk is cheap. Coaching isn't "magic" and you won't change by osmosis. There will be work during our sessions that may involve reading, reflection, and measurable action steps. This is how you will produce genuine, sustainable shifts over time.
  5. I am candid and open in my relationships.
Coaching is a co-creative partnership that requires you to be assertive in asking for what you want and to speak up when something is not working. As your coach I will maintain strict confidentiality about our sessions which enables you to be open and honest with me about your progress.
  6. I am open to candid feedback from my coach and others.
I will challenge you. You may have to reconsider behaviors and ways of thinking in which you may be highly emotionally invested. Being able to listen to honest feedback opens new choices and possibilities for you.
  7. I am willing to invest the necessary time and money in coaching.
Coaching is a powerful tool, but it requires willingness to make the proper investment. It
only makes sense if you are serious about the process.
  8. I will make this effort a priority for at least six months.
If you're expecting a quick fix, save your time and money. This is about effecting real change and that results from learning, practice, and feedback over time. It's not a magic pill.
  9. This is the right time for me to be doing this; I have the motivation and there's no
    reason to delay.

The most effective coaching relationship coincides with a real need and desire so you have both the motivation and the opportunity to apply what you're learning.)
